Meals with coupon sale items

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

One of the keys to saving money with Coupon Sense is buying low, buying lots.  So, when I make meals, I pull from my pantry and freezer instead of buying items for meals that week that may not be the best deal.  Sometimes I like to be creative and try new things.  For instance, if I have a lot of green chilis, tomato sauce, and sour cream, I can go to www.allrecipes.com and put in those ingredients and it will let me know if there are any recipes that contain all these ingredients.  The recipes are even rated by other people so you can see if they are delicious or not.  I highly recommend this site.  If you ask yourself, “What am I going to do with all this XXX?”, you can just look up recipies with that ingredient in them.

Ice Cream Fun Recipe

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

With Fry’s having Shamrock products on sale this week, and Bashas having sugar on sale, it’s a good week to make homemade ice cream.  Here’s my favorite recipe:

What you’ll need:

* 1 tablespoon sugar
* 1/2 cup milk or half & half
* 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
* 6 tablespoons rock salt
* 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
* 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
* Ice cubes

How to make it:

1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. Enjoy!

Tips:

A 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream, so double the recipe if you want more. But don’t increase the proportions more that that — a large amount might be too big for kids to pick-up because the ice itself is heavy.
